What Is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways connecting your windpipe (trachea) to your lungs. It causes mucus to form and leads to a persistent cough and other symptoms. Bronchitis can be acute, lasting several weeks, or chronic, a long-term condition.

Smoking contributes to both kinds of bronchitis, although the acute form is usually brought on by a viral infection.
