Cicada (Magicicada septendecim)

You hear them before you see them. Periodical cicada males buzz their love calls in ginormous choruses. After mating, a long cycle begins — up to 17 years in some species — before their offspring emerge.

Annual cicada species have shorter multiyear cycles, but the species are present every year. Both kinds of cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera, the true bugs. Explore their strange and noisy world.
