Emphysema

Emphysema is a form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It causes permanent damage to the alveoli, tiny air sacs within the lungs, where oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide waste is removed.

Shortness of breath and chronic coughing are major symptoms. Smoking causes most cases, but exposure to pollution, dust, and fumes is often responsible.
